The Most Beautiful Flower

“The most beautiful flower” is the title of this beautiful story that teaches a beautiful lesson about honesty.

A certain prince was on the eve of being crowned emperor, but according to the law he had to marry.

Knowing this, he decided to make a “dispute” between the court girls or whoever thought they were worthy of his auspicious proposal.

The next day, the prince announced that he would receive, in a special celebration, all the suitors and issue a challenge.

An old lady, a servant of the palace for many years, listening to the comments about the preparations, felt a slight sadness, as she knew that her young daughter had a feeling of deep love for the prince.

Upon arriving home and reporting the incident to the young woman, she was surprised to hear that she intended to go to the celebration, and asked in disbelief: “My daughter, what do you think you will do there? All the most beautiful and richest girls at court will be present. Get this foolish idea out of your head, I know you must be suffering, but don’t make suffering crazy.”

And the daughter replied: “No, dear mother, I’m not suffering and much less crazy, I know I can never be chosen, but it’s my opportunity to stay at least a few moments close to the prince, this already makes me happy, because I know that my destiny is another.”

In the evening, the young woman arrived at the palace. There were, in fact, all the most beautiful girls, with the most beautiful clothes, with the most beautiful jewelry and with the most determined intentions.

So, finally, the prince announced the challenge: “I will give each of you a seed. The one who, within six months, brings me the most beautiful flower, will be chosen as my wife and future queen.”

Time passed and the sweet young woman, as she didn’t have much skill in the arts of gardening, tended with great patience and tenderness because she knew that if the beauty of the flowers arose to the same extent as her love, she need not worry about the result.

Three months passed and nothing came of it. The young woman tried everything, used all the methods she knew, but nothing was born and day by day she perceived her dream further and further, but her love deeper and deeper.

“…for we trust we have an honest conscience, as we wish to conduct ourselves honestly in all things.” (Hebrews 13:18)

Finally, the six months had passed and nothing. She had cultivated and, aware of her effort and dedication, informed her mother that regardless of the circumstances she would return to the palace, on the agreed date and time, as she did not intend anything more than a few more moments in the prince’s company.

At the appointed time she was there, with her empty vase, alongside the other suitors, each with a flower more beautiful than the other, of all the most varied shapes and colors. She was absorbed, she had never witnessed such a beautiful scene.

And finally, the expected moment arrives, the prince arrives and observes each of the suitors with great care and attention and after going through them all, one by one, he announces the result and indicates the beautiful young woman as his future wife.

The people present had the most unusual reactions, no one understood why he had chosen precisely the one that had not cultivated anything, so, calmly he clarified: “This was the only one that cultivated the flower that made her worthy of becoming an empress, the flower of the honesty, for all the seeds I gave were barren.”

Like this young woman, we should always cultivate honesty, whether at work, at recreation, or in the congregation.
