Shoemaker’s Helper

There was a shoemaker’s helper who worked for a very patient and understanding boss. Despite his lack of skill and efficiency at work, the boss decided to keep him employed, giving the impatient shoemaker a chance to improve. Each morning, the helper started his day with a negative attitude, hurling blasphemies and curses at his fate, lamenting the need to work hard to earn his bread.

His dissatisfaction was reflected in his actions as, in anger and disdain, he would throw the newly made shoes against the walls, not caring about the result. However, something amazing happened in his life. He began to study the Bible and his perspective gradually began to change.

From the moment he accepted the study, the shoemaker’s helper began to experience a profound transformation. His mind and heart began to reflect what he was learning from the Bible. The helper began to discover new meanings and interests in his life.

From that moment on, the work to Jehovah, and even the work to the shoemaker became a source of joy for him. Every time he went to the field ministry it was an opportunity to express his gratitude to God. He began working with dedication and diligence, putting all his effort and talent into every part of his life.

On Sundays, he now enjoyed a rest with joy. Instead of spending his time swearing, he dedicated these moments to reading and meditating on publications. His appearance and behavior also changed. Where there had been frustration and resentment before, there was now peace and serenity on his face.

The shoemaker’s assistant learned that when we allow God’s presence into our lives, even the simplest tasks can become meaningful. He discovered the joy of working with purpose in the field ministry, honoring God through his daily actions.

Thus, the shoemaker’s helper teaches us that we need to maintain a positive attitude. It’s true that we don’t always feel like going to the field, or to the meeting or even to family worship, however, if we maintain a positive attitude, we will also be rewarded.

“Whatever you are doing, work at it whole-souled as for Jehovah, and not for men.” (Colossians 3:23)

How many of us sometimes weren’t in the mood to go to the field, but stayed firm, and came home refreshed?!

Jehovah knows that we are not always happy or always willing, but he helps us by giving us strength and perseverance to continue and he is pleased with our efforts.

Negative attitudes are like a fungus that spreads within us and if we don’t take care of it, it can consume us and take away our joy. Therefore, brothers and sisters, always remain vigilant and strive to cultivate positive attitudes. Ask Jehovah for help, he will always be willing to help us.
